- Robert Brian Dietrich
1957 - 2023
Robert 'Brian' Dietrich passed away at home in Kitchener on Saturday, September 9th, 2023, at the age of 65. Born December 30, 1957, in Waterloo, Ontario.
Loving father of Julia Bourmaki-Dietrich, husband to Malika Bourmaki, eldest brother of Philip (Jane) Dietrich, Gregory Dietrich and Sheila Dietrich, dear uncle to Scott, Amy and Kyle Dietrich. Predeceased by his parents Irene (nee Kaden) Dietrich and Robert Henry Dietrich.
Brian studied at the University of Toronto, and graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1990. He also obtained a Diploma in Construction Engineering Technology from Conestoga College in 1979. Brian was employed for over 23 years at the University of Waterloo in a variety of positions, including as an Architectural Designer and Construction Estimator. He had been enjoying his recent retirement from the University.
Brian was very active in his community and passionate about the conservation of heritage buildings. For a number of years, he was Secretary for the Grand Valley Society of Architects, a branch representative of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, a board member on the Waterloo Regional Arts Council, and a member of the Kinsmen Club of Kitchener-Waterloo. Brian was an avid supporter of arts & culture, with a love of music, volunteering at many local Blues and Jazz festivals over the years.
Brian was most recently a volunteer with the YMCA, where he met with and mentored many people. He believed in the value of helping others, and always taught his daughter, Julia, to above all else, "be kind".
Brian was a curious and inquisitive person, who always sought to learn more about people and the world around him. He was a lifelong reader and learner, who happily shared his knowledge with others, and always cherished quality time with family and friends. Brian was a gentle and caring soul, who was loved and will surely be missed by many.
Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at a later date with family at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo.
