Bob Transfers From Army to Air Force To Uphold Tradition

There was a time when the four Paige brothers from Bridgeport couldn't be called the "Flying Paiges" because one of the brothers had enlisted in the army. But the situation has been changed since Bob Paige changed his army uniform for that of the R.C.A.F.

Now all the sons of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Paige are fliers and two of them, Bert and Frank, have been decorated for distinguished service in action.
Bob has just completed his initial training with the R.A.F. in England and Bill is in Quebec training to be an air gunner.

      WITH H.L.I. REGIMENT

The story has been told of how Bert Paige was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal and Frank Paige won the Distinguished Flying Cross for feats of airmanship against the enemy. Bob Paige, who is spending a 30-day furlough with his parents, hasn't yet had an opportunity to match his brothers but he told The Record today that he was going to try and uphold the honor of the family.

Bob originally joined the Highland Light Infantry, a district unit, in June, 1940, and went overseas with that regiment in 1941. He always had a hankering to join the air force, and as he put it: "I was a little too hasty and couldn't wait for a call from the R.C.A.F., so I joined the army."
Part of the Canadian regiment's job while in England was acting as instructors for the British Home Guard. "They're a great bunch of fellows, the Home Guard," he said. "Most of them are veterans of the last war or too old for the army and they show more interest in their training than many of the regular soldiers.

"As a matter of fact we didn't see many of the crack British regiments, most of them are stationed somewhere in the actual war zones. But don't think for a minute that the Home Guard wouldn't give. a good a account of themselves in case England was invaded.

      TRAIN YOUNG OVERSEAS

"They train the boys at a younger age over there in actual flying conditions than they do here in Canada." He continued. "Boys 15 or 16 years old take training in air navigation and are often taken on flights in bombers. All in all they get an excellent groundwork for the air force by the time they are old enough to join active service."

Leading Aircraftman Paige has great praise for the hospitality of the English and Scotch. He spent two leaves in Glasgow and Edinburgh and even though rations are short he said he had never been treated or fed better in his life.

It wasn't until July, 1942, that the 24-year-old Bridgeport soldier could transfer to the air force. He was attached to the R.A.F. and studied navigation, wireless and initial flying rudiments.

After the basic training was completed Bob was posted to a grading school to receive 12 hours' flying experience. Here the students were graded and Bob was earmarked as a bomber. He was recently sent back to Canada to complete his flying training and is now attached to the. R.C.A.F.
"England's O.K. and they treated. us swell but it's great to get back to Canada even though it is hard to find any of the friends that I used to chum with in this country. I guess all of them are somewhere in the armed forces," he said.
