- Roy (Turk) Spencer
A well-known Ayr resident, Roy (Turk) Howard Spencer, passed away at Victoria Hospital, London, on Sunday, October 10th, 1999. He was in his 72nd year. Born in Galt, he was a son of the late Philip Thomas Spencer and Carrie Edna Main. One of this district's first tractor-trailer drivers, Turk drove for McDonald Transport on Scott Street, Ayr. He subsequently became a mechanic for the firm which was later bought out by Drumbo Transport. He served 42 years with Ayr Fire Department, retiring as a senior captain. A sports lover, he was goaltender for the championship Ayr Rockets hockey team of the 1950's. Later he helped with minor hockey teams and the provincial titlist Ayr Blue Tops ladies' ball team. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survived by his wife, Joan; sisters Doreen and her husband Frank Churchill and Shirley Mackie, all of Paris; brother Earl and his wife Amelia of Cambridge; sisters-in-law Anne and her husband Bill Burgess of Cambridge, Pearl Spencer of Roseville and by brother-in-law Jim and his wife Seanagh Murdoch of Peterborough. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by brother Walter and sister Jean Lyons. Rested at the Ayr Chapel, Win. Kipp Funeral Home, Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where funeral service will be held today (Thursday), October 14 at 1: 30 p.m. with Reverend Fred Hagle of Knox United Church officiating. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.
