Notes - Tousaw, Russell Wallace, February 20, 1929 June 21, 2009. Passed away peacefully with his family around him at Woodstock General Hospital on Father's Day. Beloved husband of Elizabeth (Beth) Bingeman, and loving father of Susan, Frank, Barry and Scott. Son of Albert Anderson Tousaw and Virginia Wallace Knowlton. Born in Montreal, Russ spent his childhood on Grey Avenue with his four sisters, Eleanor ( James) Clark of Collingwood, Mary (Robert) Scott of Oakville, Joyce (Dennis) Atto of Nanaimo, BC and Margaret 'Muggie' (Dennis) Chambers of London, Ontario and Capetown, SA. His fondest memories of his youth were of summers at the family cottage on Point Iroquois on the St. Lawrence River and of his teenage years in Coaticook in the Eastern Townships. He studied Engineering at Queen's University before heading to British Columbia. It was there, while attending the United Church's Christian Leadership Training School, that he met Beth, a young teacher from Waterloo County, whom he married in 1955. They raised their family in Galt, where Russ worked as an electrical engineer at Allen Bradley. In 1971, he and Beth took on a 30-year adventure of farm living, which were Beth's roots, when they moved to the former Wallace Munro farm north of Embro in Oxford County. Despite the loss of Barry in 1981, their years in the wonderful Brooksdale community were without equal and were the centre of their children's and grandchildren's happy youths. Russ transferred his electrical skills to the Hendrikson Spring Company, Fanshawe College, St. Mary's Cement and Tavistock Cheese. In his retirement, he took great delight in driving the children of Brooksdale and Harrington to Highland Park School for Ross Smith Bus Lines. In 2003, he and Beth moved into Woodstock. His fondest personal pleasures were his family, his Church and his Lodge. He was a 33rd degree Mason through both Scottish and York rites. He and Beth have had long associations with Bloomingdale United Church, First United Church (Galt), St. Andrew's United Church (Brooksdale) and College Avenue United Church (Woodstock); and Russ was a licensed lay preacher. He loved pitching the tent trailer, his ham radio, all manner of puzzles, tossing the ball with his boys, the novels of E. Phillips Oppenheim, and, most recently, pulling nails at his daughter's 200-year-old cottage in Port Burwell. He reveled in his children's successes and was equally proud of their spouses, David Start, Mary (Hendriks) Tousaw and Patricia (Leduc) Tousaw. The greatest joy of his later years was the camaraderie and achievements of his 10 grand-daughters: Mary Beth and Virginia Start of Curries; Frank's Kathryn, Charlotte, Victoria and Jacqueline Tousaw of Caistor Centre; and Scott's Emily, Laura, Julia and Ellen Tousaw of Goderich. He was like another father and grandfather to John (Jennifer) Cuddie, Sarah, Mitchell and Russell (his namesake). He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Dr. J. Byron (Kay) Bingeman of Princeton, NJ and Gordon (Kris) Bingeman of Crosshill, as well as by nieces and nephews across Canada and the US, and in England and South Africa. Friends and family will be received at the Smith-LeRoy Funeral Home, 69 Wellington Street North, Woodstock on Wednesday, June 24th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at College Avenue United Church, 22 Wilson Street, Woodstock on Thursday, June 25th at 11 a.m. with Rev. David Duncan officiating. Memorial donations to Woodstock General Hospital's Palliative and Long-Term Care Units, College Avenue United Church or the Masonic Foundation would be gratefully acknowledged.
