Berlin [Kitchener, Ont.]: [s.n.].
__________________________
BOWERS, SAMUEL BOWERS was born in Berlin in a well known local family. His parents moved to Canada in 1826 from Pennsylvania, their families having settled there in 1750.(1)
He was educated at Rockwood Academy and Victoria University, Cobourg, then studied at Toronto School of Medicine, and in 1856 at the University of the City of New York. In 1857 he received a degree from Queen's University, Kingston.
He commenced practice at Plattsville, and on Dec. 10, 1857 the Berlin papers carried a notice that his office was at the residence of John Hoffman, Esq. Waterloo Village.
In September 1859 at Dr. Christ's trial [a fellow Doctor charged with grave robbing], his testimony was to the effect that he had identified human bones in Christ's possession. (2)
He removed to Melbourne, Quebec, in 1860, and in May 1865 arrived in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. For the first two years there he managed a peat company, later resuming the practice of medicine.
He was active in community and professional affairs, was mayor for three years, and held other municipal offices. He was connected with several heavy mining corporations. (3).
He died on January 2, 1900, and was survived by his widow the former Hannah Flower, daughter of Wm. Flower, of Berlin, also by one son and three daughters. (4).
