Notes |
- Died 18 Jan 1878 Nikolaus Dietrich near St. Agatha in Wilmot Township, one of the first finders in this region, died at the age of 85 years. He was born Ober-Sulzbach, Canton (H)essmunster, Elsass in the year 1792, worked as Hußar under Napoleon I in the 1812 campaign to Russia, was at the battles in Leizig and Waterloo, was taken to Danzig as a prisoner of war where he stayed for 6 months, until an officer informed him of a good time to defect, which he used and was shortly after back together with his family. He married and immigrated in 1834 with his wife and 3 children to America, moved near St. Agatha, which at that time was almost only forest land. He had 9 children, 94 grandchildren, 116 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. In his last few years he lived with his son Theobold H. Dietrich and died of old age. He was never seriously ill, never needed a doctor and was until three days before his death in good health. His greatest pleasure was talking about Napoleon, the campaigns and battles. The funeral took place on January 21st with countless friends and family attending
