    • Former alderman T. Harry Ainlay dies at age 84

      T. Harry Ainlay, a former Kitchener alderman who spent more than 30 years in public life, died early today at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. He was 84.

      Ainlay was a Kitchener alderman for 17 years, retiring in 1962. He was defeated by the late Dr. S. F. Leavine in a 1959 bid for the mayoralty. In 1958 he was appointed by council to the Kitchener Auditorium Commission and served as chairman in 1962. He also was a member for many years of the Kitchener-Waterloo and suburban planning board, the Grand Valley Conservation Authority and the Waterloo Township planning board.

      Ainlay was a former member and chairman of the Kitchener committee of adjustment and for three years, the city's representative on the Mid-Western Ontario Development Association.

      In his business life, he worked for B. F. Goodrich Canada Ltd. for more than 40 years, retiring in May 1964. He became purchasing agent at Goodrich in 1923 and manager of purchases in 1933 with responsibility for buying all materials, machinery and equipment for the company.

      After retiring from Goodrich, he worked as a sales representative for Wiebe Realty for nine years until 1975. A founding president and life member of the Central Ontario Purchasing Agents Associaton (now the Purchasing and Management Association of Canada), Ainlay was given a life membership in the Ontario Rubber Group in 1966 for his service to the industry. He was also a past president of the Kitchener Young Men's Club and of the K-W Kiwanis Club. For many years, he was a director of the K-W YMCA and served three years as president. In the 1960s, he was district vice-president, national council of the YMCA.

      In 1963-64 Ainlay was president of the Kitchener Musical Society. At the time of his death he was a director and life member of K-W Counselling Inc., formerly the K-W Family Service Bureau of which he was founding president in 1950.

      He was a director of the Kitchener Chamber of Commerce for 20 years and in 1959-60 president. In addition, Ainlay was a director of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce for five years. He was a life member, trustee and member of session of Christ the King United Church and building committee chairman in 1967. Surviving are his wife, the Elizabeth, to whom he had been married for 61 years; one son, Kenneth of Cambridge, and two daughters, Mrs. Laverne (Marian) Cook, and Mrs. Donald (Eleanor) Smith, both of Kitchener. The funeral will be conducted on Monday at 2 p.m. at Christ the King United Church.
