Notes |
- Ventry R. Conway (brother of John Dumas Conway), recently graduated as a druggist, decided to set up business in Hespeler and in 1881 built the present Phin Building, which was insured through our office on December 9th of that year.
Before the building was ready for occupancy another Druggist, Mr. George K. C. McGregor had opened a store across the street about where Gordon Schmidt now has his shoe repair shop, which he continued some years. He was the father of Dr. McGregor, head of McGregor Clinic in Hamilton who was born here.
In view of this rather unexpected development, Ventry Conway decided that as two druggists were too many in this small Village, he would try somewhere else and he went to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, where he carried on a drug business successfully for a long, long time.
Meantime, Dr. Robert McIntyre had taken in as a partner, Dr. Levi Clemens, and they rented the Conway store and had their office in it and ran a drug store in connection with their practise, which in those days was not at all uncommon.
