- OSBORNE COUNTY HISTORICAL MARKER
IN MEMORY OF:
FROENIKA NEUSCHWANGER (July 26, 1827-March 5, 1888)
RACHEL HUGHES (1862-August 24,1889)
On private property approximately a half mile north of this marker are where the remains of Froenika Neuschwanger (also called "Veronica" and "Frona") and her daughter, Rachel (Neuschwanger) Hughes, lie buried. The actual site is located about 125 feet north of the southeast corner of the northwest quarter of Section 35 in Tilden Township. The two women are buried on what in 1888 was the Mary Neuschwanger Farm. The actual burial sites are no longer known, as the stones marking these graves are long gone and the land has since been farmed over.
Froenika Neuschwanger died March 5, 1888 at the age of 61 years. She left five sons, six daughters, and 28 grandchildren. Rachel died at the relatively young age of 26 on August 24, 1889. It is unknown if she and her husband of only two years, David Hughes, had children Froenika Neuschwanger was born in Germany on July 27, 1826. Her husband, Henry (Heinrich) Neuschwanger, was born on August 3, 1818, in Lebenhan, Germany. The couple and their two small boys crossed the Atlantic Ocean for America in either July 1846 or 1847. Four month-oki Henry died during the crossing and was buried at sea. They eventually arrived at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and for a time the family lived in a barn. Their third child, Mary, was born August 3, 1847 in this barn
Then the family rode a stagecoach from Hamilton to Zurich in Hay Township, Ontario, Canada, near Lake Huron and northeast of Detroit, Michigan. They lived there for about 23 years, clearing brush and timber from 160 acres. The land was rich and had large stands of hemlock and pine. Henry and Froenika had 10 more children born the daughter Rachel arrived in the world on October 24, 1862. Their last child was George, born May 9, 1866. Hemy moved his family in 1871 to Kill Creek, Osborne County, Kansas, and were among the area's first settlers. His daughter, Christiana, remembered seeing the smoke from the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 as they traveled towards Kansas. The Neuschwangers lived in the Kill Creek community for 20 years.
Sunday, April 1, 1877 - "This morning Mrs. Neuschwanger [Froenika] and Mary came up with John to spend the day. I had a little hard time talking with them, because they don't understand English" - Howard Ruede, as reported in his 1936 book "Sod-House Days."
Wednesday, March 28, 1877 - "The folks here all talk German more than English, but they can all get along, even if they cannot use the latter tongue very fluently." - "Sod-House Days."
Froenika and Rachel fulfilling their Mennonite traits, were known to be simple in their habits and honest in all their dealings. Mother and daughter shouldered full responsibility for maintairing the household, providing devoted care, feeding and clothing of the many children, working in the kitchen garden and in the crop fields. They never had a real day's rest in the modern sense.
As we look toward the burial sites of Froenika and Rachel let us take a moment to remenber all the dedicated Frontier Women who came before us and to thank them for their selfish sacrifices.
