- Stricken at Rink
Sudden Death of W. I. Reid Came as Great Shock to Community
Stricken suddenly while curling at the local rink on Thursday night about 9.30 o'clock, Walter Inglis Reid, member of one of the oldest and most prominent families of this community, passed away at his home here at 4.30 o'clock Friday morning. While taking part with his rink in the local curling competition on Thursday evening, Mr. Reid complained of feeling ill and was assisted by a fellow curler to the club room, where it was seen that his condition was serious. A doctor was summoned and he was removed to his home. In spite of all that could be done, he failed to rally and death followed in the early hours of the following morning. His sudden demise, at the comparatively early age of 59 years, cast a gloom over the entire community, where deceased was highly esteemed and respected by everyone for his many fine qualities. He was widely known among the curling fraternity of Western Ontario where, for many years past, the members of the Reid rink could always he depended upon to give a good account of themselves at the various bonspiels in which they competed. Curling was his favorite sport and he was a staunch member of the Ayr Union Curling Club where he could always be counted upon to give of his best in all movements for the advancement of the game in this community. Born at Reidsville, deceased was the youngest son of the late W. I. Reid, pioneer lumber dealer of this district. He spent the first 35 years of his life at that point, removing to Ayr 24 years ago. For the past 26 years he had been in charge of the Galt branch of the Reid Company, taking over complete charge one year ago. Taking an active interest in the affairs of the community, he was for many years a member of the Board of Education, and he was also a valued member of the Ayr Masonic Lodge. In church circles he was a member of the former Stanley Street congregation. He affiliated with Knox United church upon the occasion of the union, and for many years was a member of the Board of Managers. He was married 25 years ago to Esther Jackson Renwick of Reidsville, who, along with the following family, survives: Ruth, Walter and Jackson, all at home; also by one brother, John Q. Reid, and one sister, Miss Clara Reid, both of Ayr. - The Funeral - The funeral, which took place to the Ayr Cemetery on Monday afternoon was one of the most largely attended in years, friends and relatives from all sections of the district gathering to pay their last respects. A private service for members of the family and relatives, conducted by Rev. J. W. Currie, pastor of Knox United Church, and Rev. D. I. Ellison of Toronto, a former pastor of Stanley Street Church, was held at the family residence at 2 o'clock.
