- Pettie, Wayne B. - It has pleased the Lord to take to Himself, the soul of Wayne Burdell Pettie, on Friday, January 20, 2006 at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener. A lifelong resident of Elmira, he married his high-school sweetheart, June Weichel, on June 24, 1945. The entire family joined with friends to celebrate sixty years of married love just this past year. He was blessed with two children, John and Linda, and his two children through marriage, Margaret Pettie and Steven Weber. He was also blessed with two cherished grandchildren, Chantelle and Matthew Love. Another blessing was his three special grandchildren, Nathanael, Alayna and Victoria Frey. He is survived by one niece, Charlene Pettie Kuepfer, and also many nieces and nephews through marriage. He was godfather to Colleen Hahn Blain and Ryan Weichel and Richard Wegener. He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Hazel (Honsinger) Pettie and one brother, Arthur in 1960. He owned and operated M. Weichel & Son Hardware for many years and always took a keen interest in the town. Along with his wife, he was co-president of the Elmira Horticultural Society and was on the Board of Directors of the Waterloo County Hall of Fame. He did volunteer work for Chateau Gardens in many ways. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War and was an Amateur Radio Operator, VE3 CWV, since 1960. He was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and served his Lord in many capacities. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, on Sunday, January 22, from 1-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. At 9 a.m. on Monday, transfer will be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Elmira for funeral service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Richard Frey officiating, followed by interment in Elmira Union Cemetery. In his memory, donations to St. Paul's Lutheran Church Accessibility Fund would be appreciated by his family as expressions of sympathy.
