- Sad Death of W. Schlieman
Ended His Life With a Revclver [sic Revolver] in Berlin Early Saturday Morning
"Billy Schlieman is dead." Such was the news that flashed through town Saturday and the news had a sadder aspect when it became known that death was due to his own hand. It is not exactly known when it was committed, but he rose at 6:45 and dressed himself and enquired of his wife, who was still in bed, not feeling well, if there was anything she wanted at the market this morning. Her reply was no, but she said she needed some groceries and gave him a slip of paper telling what was wanted. He bid her an affectionate good-bye and left the room, his wife thinking he had gone up town. A few minutes later a shot rang out which startled her, and getting up went outside to see who was doing the shooting, and on opening the door of the lavatory was horrified to find her husband, apparently dead. Doctors Lackner and Hett were sent for but found that death had been instantaneous. Coroner Lackner made an examination and deemed an inquest unnecessary. Deceased was born in Berlin 46 years ago, and after leaving school learned the trade of woodturner, which profession he followed until about ten years ago when he opened up a repair shop in the Grand Union Block, and about two years later opened up a cigar store and poolroom, now owned by Zettle & Montag. About two years ago he retired and took up an agency for an automobile firm, but after six months he decided to go into business and purchased the controlling interest in the Co-operative Cigar Co., which business he ratained [sic] until his death. Mr. Schlieman always took a deep interest in public affairs and sat for two years, 1896-97, as representative of the West Ward in Town Council. He is survived by his wife (nee Katherine Dunker) and one brother, Louis Schlieman, town.
