- WM. WENDORF HANOVER TWIN DIED TUESDAY
A Native of Germany, He Was One of Canada's Oldest Twins
IN 94TH YEAR
Took Part in Franco-Prussian War--Came to Canada in 1873
HANOVER, Oct. 22 William Wendorf, one of Canada's oldest - twins, passed away at an early hour on Tuesday morning at his home in Hanover at the advanced age of 93 years. He had been in poor health for quite some time, but had been seriously ill for only the past two or three weeks, and his death was not unexpected. His brother Charles, survives him, but he is not in any too good health either.
The twins were born in Mecklenburg, Germany, on April 8, 1847, and received their early education in Germany. William fought in the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, serving under Bismarchk, known as the "Iron Chancellor." He took part in the famous battle of Metz, and also in the siege Paris, as a member of the 2nd Blue Dragoons, which was one of Germany's famous regiments. Soon after the close of the war he was married to Augusta Hirtz, who came from a small place near. Bostock, Germany, 1873, and coming they direct Hanover, and have made to their home here ever since. It was a little more than two years later that his twin brother, Charles, also came to Canada and the two men have been inseparable companions ever since. They were employed for a time in the making of furniture in the old Nichol's plant, but later both went into the livery business, one at each side of the town, and while there was the greatest business rivalry between the pair, they were good natured about it and got along well together. They took a deep interest in the welfare and progress of Hanover and proved to be excellent citizens. Both were Liberals in politics, and were strong supporters in their day of the late Dr Landerkin. They have been living retired for the past 20 years, and during more recent years they were almost constantly in each other's company and took a great pride in the fact that they were the oldest twins living in Canada. They were always held in the highest esteem by the people of Hanover and their name was a household one throughout the town. It was said of them that their relationship was always of the pleasantest kind, and that no serious differences marred their lives.
In addition to his wife, who is not enjoying good health at the present time, William Wendorf is survived by three sons, William, Dundas, and Henry and Samuel, in Hanover, and two daughters, Sara, Mrs. J. Walls, Kitchener, and Sophia, Mrs. S. Hughes, Vancouver, B.C. He also leaves his brother, Charles, of Hanover.
