- HEWER, WILLIAM JOHNATHAN S.
Suddenly, at his home on Grange Road in Guelph. On Wednesday, May 17, 1917, he attended to business and was about the market, as was his usual custom, retiring at 9 o'clock. Mrs. Hewer was awakened shortly after two, by his deep breathing and tried to arouse him but he never spoke and passed peacefully away. Mr. Hewer was a quiet, well read man, respected by all. He was the youngest son of the late William and Sarah Hewer, who were among the early pioneers, coming from Farnham, England in 1847 and settling at Arkell. He was educated at the then famous Rockwood Academy. In 1867, he was married to Mary J. Gibson by Venerable Archdeacon Palmer in St. George's Church, when that building occupied the site of the present St. George's Square. A few years later the young couple purchased the home, where they have since resided. Besides his widow, the following survive: Mrs. W. M. Cowie and Mrs. David Brown of Guelph; Mrs. O. E. Kinnee of St. Catharines; Mrs. L. L. Powers of Westfield, NY; F. W. and Berriedale of Hamilton; Sinclair of Grand Rapids, Ml; Irvin B. of Calgary; and one grandson, Zindell Hewer, whom they adopted, who left for overseas service, sailing last August with the first draft of the 6th battery; also twenty- nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and one surviving sister, Mrs. Andrew Ritchie, Norwich St, Guelph.
