    • KILLED AT THE PORTAGE

A Traveller Meets a Horrible Death While Jumping From a C. P.R. Train at Portage la Prairie.

The only thing to mar the enjoyment of the Queen's birthday festivities at Portage la Prairie yesterday was the untimely death of a young man who reached that place yesterday afternoon on the No. 2 train from the west, which ran into Portage la Prairie about 2.20 in the afternoon. From particulars obtained it, appears that as the train was pulling into the old station (which it now runs through and stops at the new one opposite that of the M. & N. W. R) a young man thinking it that it was not going to stop at Portage, attempted to alight. The train was going at a good speed and he was on the front portion of the rear car. He made a spring for the platform and either missed his footing or held on to the car too long, for he was dragged between the car and the platform and instantly crushed to death. Provincial Constable Cox, of Portage la Prairie, was immediately informed of the occurrence and hastened to the C. P. R. station, where he took possession of the body. Upon searching the dead man he found a pocket book containing the name "William L. Le Kuntz, Berlin Ont." It is believed that he was a student of the Ontario Veterinary college, and when the body was seen by several residents of Portage la Prairie they gave the opinion that, he was a veterinary surgeon practicing at Deloraine. He had a gold watch and chain on him but no money.

      HIS IDENTITY.

It is learned in the city that Mr. Kuntz is a veterinary surgeon who has been practicing in Boissevain.

      _____________

      WANTED IN BERLIN.

GLOBE. A despatch was received at the city detective office last evening from High Constable Klippert, of Berlin, asking for the arrest of William L. Kuntz, a young veterinary doctor, who was wanted in the western town for larceny. The telegram gave a minute description of the man's appearance, and probable dress, adding that he would, in all likelihood, seek to Leave Toronto for the Pacific coast on the night train. Armed with these pointers, Detectives Cuddy and McGrath went down to the Union Station, and soon spotted their man on the platform. When accosted, Kuntz denied his identity, giving another name to the officers, but he was taken to police headquarters and his identity established by means of documents on his person. He had also a ticket for Vancouver in his pocket. No particulars have been received by the local authorities of the nature of his alleged offence.

Mr. Klippert left on the 5 pm. this evening to bring back the man. Kuntz lives near Crosshill. Was given some money to pay to another person and he is charged with appropriating it to his own use.

      _____________

William L. Kuntz Instantly Killed by a Railway Train.

      PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE,
May 24. This afternoon a passenger by name of Wm. L. Kuntz attempted to get off train No. 2 While it was passing the old station platform, and fell between the wheels and was instantly killed. The wheels cut off one leg, one arm and one ear and crushed the body in bad shape. On his person was found a pocketbook, which read "Wm. L. Kuntz, Berlin, Ont," and contained a card showing the man to be a veterinary who attended lectures at the college in Toronto during 1893. He was seen attempting to alight from the train by a boy, and it is supposed that he thought the train was going right through and was getting off at the platform, which formerly was used by the railway company as a passenger depot. He is a man about 22 years old, fair complexion, five feet six inches high, and weighs about 150 pounds.

Dr. Macklin, the coroner, was seen by a TRIBUNE reporter, who said that he had made all the necessary enquiries, was still awaiting further developments and from what he had learned he was opinion that no inquest would be held.

Deceased formerly practised in Boissevain as a veterinary surgeon.

      ____________

      Kuntz Killed.

A man supposed, from papers in his pocket, to be W. L. E. Kuntz of Berlin, Ont., a veterinary surgeon, was cut to pieces at Portage la Prairie yesterday while attempting to board a moving Canadian Pacific train. Kuntz was the young man who was arrested in Berlin for debt before leaving and let go on suspended sentence by the Judge and who left for the west with a Vancouver, B.C. ticket in his pocket and money supplied by his friends. His death is regretted.
