Notes |
- William Goldie
Dr. William A. Goldie, a native of Ayr, died in Toronto on Sunday at the age of 76 years. The late Dr. Goldie was in active practice for 50 years, retiring in 1947. He spent much of his career in clinical work at Toronto General Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children. Numbered among his patients were Sir John and Lady Eaton.
In 1919 Sr. John and Lady Eaton endowed the chair of medicine at the University of Toronto, the first full-time chair of medicine in a British Empire university. In actual fact, Sr. John turned the funds over to Dr. Goldie, saying: "Here's the money. You do what you like with it." Dr. Goldie was on the university's medical staff from 1919 until 1929, and previous to this had worked with the university pathology and bacteriology departments for some years.
His death resulted from cancer of the lung, discovered when he attended one of the community x-ray clinics in the city.
Dr. Goldie was born at Ayr in 1873, a son of David Goldie, who owned the Goldie Flour Mill at Greenfield. He attended school here and later went to Galt Collegiate and Toronto University, where he graduated in medicine.
Besides his medical career, he had a great love for nature, inherited from his grandfather, the late John Goldie. He was a keen woodsman, and one of his campaigns was a movement to have the salmon of the Maritime Provinces protected and preserved.
John Goldie, his grandfather, came to Canada in its early pioneer stages to make a collection of flora for the Glasgow Botanical Gardens, and remained to build the once-flourishing Goldie Flour Mill.
Dr. Goldie is survived by four brothers: George and Herbert, Vancouver; James, Okanogan Centre, B.C. and Pat, Toronto; and three sisters: Mrs. F. A. Cleland, Mrs. D. E. Kilgour and Mrs. J. W. Falkner, all of Toronto.
__________
Mrs. David Goldie, Dr. William E, Goldie and Miss Estie Goldie, of Ayr, left last Thursday for Germany, sailing on Saturday from New York. The former will return in autumn, but Dr. and Miss Goldie will remain in Germany for at least a year.
Waterloo County Chronicle, 19 May 1898, p. 5
Funeral service was held in Convocation Hall on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
