1087 Doon Village Road, Kitchener, Waterloo Region, Ontario |
- The late Victorian two-storey residence was built, circa 1891 by stonemason Henry Boyer. There is a stone foundation about which rises walls of buff Tilt brick, surmounted by a hipped roof with elaborate paired eaves brackets. Of interest are the one-storey square bays to either side, joined by a shallow mansard roof which creates a small entrance porch. Window openings are segmentally arched and an old brick chimney rises above the roof on the east side. The presence of outbuildings and mature trees adds to the pleasant village atmosphere..1a

- The Oberholtzer-Lang house
An imposing Queen Anne Revival mansion built by G. V. Oberholtzer in the early 1880's. The house was a basic large square with projecting front and side bays and kitchen wing. The house was purchased by George C. H. Lang around the year 1900. At this time the house was extensively remodelled and enlarged. The porch with its Neo Classic Revival features would date to this period. The tower also probably dates to this time since it too has Neo Classic elements, and similar towers were being built on other houses, notably Buena Vista, at this same time. The house was demolished circa 1930- 1940.1a

- A large impressive Italianate mansion set in extensive grounds. The house is of a basic L shape, to which are added a number of projecting bays, with partial return pediment tops. The woodwork of the house is still in place, the heavy cornice and double brackets, as well as that on the two bay windows. The back and side porches both are original. The front porch, however, has been enclosed as a vestibule, with a Neo Classic Revival porch in front of it. The balustrade above has been replaced by one of modern iron. The brick has been painted. The original house was of red brick with white stone quoins and lintels. The main losses are the roof belvedere, and ornaments, and the wrought iron fence which originally surrounded the property. Built in the late 1860's, the house was for many years the home of L. J. Breithaupt and is one of the very few remaining mansions of the leaders of nineteenth century Berlin.1a

- Set back on the slight rise above Queen Street, "Buena Vista" is an imposing 2-storey red brick Italianate style residence built in 1878 and later "modernized" with Queen Anne features. There is a central tower, projecting front bay, closed-in wrap-around verandah and many original decorative details. It was built for J. M. Staebler, a furniture manufacturer who had originally intended to build a factory on the site. It was subsequently acquired by the J. M. Schneider family, but the Erb family were the longest-term owners. Ephriam Erb, glove manufacturer, purchased the property from Mr. Staebler and, later, his son Irvin Erb acquired it from the Schneiders.

- The Shoemaker-Lackner house
A large imposing house, in late Classic Revival style, with three bays per side. Built of white brick, it had quoined corners and recessed brick alcoves in which the main floor windows were set. The house dates to 1860 and was built by David Shoemaker, the County Registrar, and served as both a bank office and residence. Later, Dr. Lackner used the house as office and residence. Building was demolished by the Economical Mutual Insurance Company, who then built their red brick Georgian style office block on the site.1a

Kitchener - New life may be breathed into the historic Barra Castle on Queen Street South in Kitchener.
A local planner has received approval from Heritage Kitchener, who wants to save the original part of the structure, build in 1930. Today's Record reports, Paul Puopolo, from the IBI Group in Kitchener, plans to demolish the back of the building, which is essentially falling down, while restoring the front, which measures 36-hundred square feet.
The building has been off limits for two years, ever since inspectors deemed it unsafe due to numerous building and fire code violations. The proposal would involve adding more residences and business to the structure, which currently houses three apartments. Kitchener's Development and Technical Services Committee will take up the issue on September 14th, and it will go before council on the 22nd. The planner's offer to buy the building expires at the end of this month.1a

his beautiful two storey log home has 4 over 4 window frames, a centered front door facing the road, and a shingled roof. The property used to be the home of the Kaiser family, and they had a printing shop, which has since been torn down. The Schiedel family is currently building an addition on the back of the house.
This log home was only recently 'discovered' when the present owners were replacing the siding on the house, the workers found the wood walls. They decided to simply renovate the original walls, and made the home appear to be as it was when it was originally built. This house was previously owned by Frederick and Louis Kaiser, who came to the Roseville area in 1822 from Pennsylvania. Fred Kaiser's son, Louis Kaiser was a printer and operated a printing shop located on the northeast corner of the property. In his shop, Louis Kaiser employed five men. His grandson, Robert Marshall, remembers as a little boy helping his grandfather deliver invoices in a horse and buggy to various to businesses in Galt. The printing shop also specialized in wedding invitations, funeral cards, and business cards. By the end of his career, Louis Kaiser had worn out five presses. His last press was donated to Doon Pioneer Village. On Friday January 31st, 1958 the headline of the Galt Reporter read,"Roseville printer, the Oldest in Canada" . The first school in the Roseville area was also located on the Kaiser farm across from the Roseville United Brethren in Christ Church. A blacksmith and cooper shop were also located on the property. In 1961, Stuart E. Franklin obtained a part of the former Kaiser property and started to build a residential subdivision. The size of the Kaiser property was reduced a great deal by this sale.1a
