- Ezeldine Abdallah, known as Abby to his friends, was born in Palestine but grew up in Latakia, Syria. At 18, he left Syria for Germany to study mechanical engineering. Adballah then moved to Canada to start a family with his wife Zeinab.
For 30 years, he worked as a sheet metal worker at Budd Automotive in Kitchener. There, he was able to put his design skills into action through the company's budding idea program, improving productivity, ergonomics and safety procedures for his co-workers.
Abdallah's design skills were also evident at home. If something needed fixing, he would learn how to fix it or rebuild it. He built a wood-burning stove and added an extension onto his house, adopting the nickname 'MacGyver' because of his building abilities.
In his later years there were struggles, including losing his sight and battling kidney disease. Earlier this year, Abdallah and his wife lost their family home in a devastating house fire.
COVID-19 hit and Abdallah fought the disease for six weeks until he died at St. Mary's General Hospital on May 1.
"I would not be the man that I am today without your guidance and love. Thank you for my life. My heart hurts because there is now a piece missing from it. I will cherish all the memories," said his son, Maher.
