LABORERS STRIKE.
Eight of Mr. Ed. Dermul's laborers went on strike this morning. The men were paid $1.85 to $1.60 a day and are demanding 18 cents an hour. Mr. Dermul refuses to comply with their request, as he has employed the men steadily during the winter months, even when there was not much work to do.

AGED CITIZEN PASSES AWAY
Mr. Ed. Durmel Well-known Waterloo Contractor Died on Thursday
LAID FIRST PAVEMENT
After a lingering illness of asthma for several years, and during the last three weeks being stricken with dropsy and heart trouble, Edward Dermul passed away at his home on the corner of Princess and Queen Sts. at 3.30 o'clock on Thursday afternoon. The deceased had attained the ripe age of 82 years. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon 2 o'clock from the residence, a short service was conducted at where by Rev. E. Bockelman, to Mount Hope cemetery for burial.
The late Mr. Dermul came to this country many years ago from Germany with his second wife, and took up his residence at St. Jacobs. Twenty-five years ago they moved to Waterloo and have lived here continuously ever since.
He was a contractor by trade, having been constructing pavements and sewers for the town for the past fifteen years. His first contract the construction was of a cobble stone pavement on King street. He then tendered successfully for the building of the trunk sewer. From these contracts he went into contracting and teaming generally. Last year he was forced to retire through ill health Little is known of his relatives in Germany, but none are known to reside in Canada.
The deceased was well known in Waterloo. He was of a kindly disposition and had acquired many friends during his long residence here, who will in his death lose a sincere friend
