  	The Homer Watson House and Gallery, located at 1756 Old Mill Road, is situated on the south side of the road between Mill Park Drive and Roos Street in Doon Village in the City of Kitchener. The two-storey brick building was designed in the early Scottish Gothic style and was constructed in 1834 by Adam Ferrie, a founding industrialist in the Village of Doon.

  	39 Doon Valley Drive is associated with three prominent citizens of Waterloo County. The first owner, the Honourable Adam Ferrie, was the founder of Doon Village. Samuel Snider, who purchased the property from Ferrie, owned the Blair Mill, as well as other mills that he and a partner operated in Bridgeport and Baden. Thomas Slee, one of the first trustees of the area, and the Doon Postmaster from 1867 to 1893, was the last significant owner of the property, purchasing it from Snider in 1878. In addition to its association with persons of historic significance, Doon Valley Drive (formerly Doon Village Road), was once an important linkage between the Village of Doon to Tow Town and Oregon (today Upper Doon). 39 Doon Valley Drive is unique in its use of building materials and the methods of construction. This one-and-a-half-storey house combined granite, limestone, fieldstone and lime mortar in its construction.   	883 Doon Village Road is associated with Benjamin Burkholder, a well-known and respected teacher, who had the residence built in circa 1863, on land he had owned for 25 years. Burkholder received his teaching certificate in 1843, becoming one of the first four people to do so. He taught in a number of schools in the Region of Waterloo including: the little red schoolhouse at the east end of Kitchener, Waterloo's second schoolhouse, and the little schoolhouse in Doon. 883 Doon Village Road is a good representation of Georgian style in the Region of Waterloo. Typical of Georgian style, the building is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay facade. The facade also demonstrates Georgian architecture with its centrally located door with surrounding transom and sidelights, as well as its six over six windows with shutters. In addition to the windows on the facade, there are small square attic windows and two chimneys at either end of the gable roof.1a 1aCity of Kitchener By-law 84-52.

  	The late Victorian two-storey residence was built, circa 1891 by stonemason Henry Boyer. There is a stone foundation about which rises walls of buff Tilt brick, surmounted by a hipped roof with elaborate paired eaves brackets. Of interest are the one-storey square bays to either side, joined by a shallow mansard roof which creates a small entrance porch. Window openings are segmentally arched and an old brick chimney rises above the roof on the east side.   	This handsome one and a half storey residence, with hipped rood, was built in 1890 by Herman Cole, co-owner of the former Watson Woollen Mill. Though not a large building, it displays a wealth of well-executed classical features. These include a porch with pedimented roof supported by grouped Doric columns and roof detail of denticulated frieze. The eaves brackets of the house roof and the sementally arched windows are Italianate features.   	Although set on a narrow lot, the generous setback lends an air of graciousness to this front-gabled, one and half storied house in buff brick. It was built in 1894 by David Cole, co-owner of the former Watson Woollen Mill. Attractive features are the bay window with bracketed roof and the small entrace porch. Here, turned wooden posts support a hipped roof which shelters the transomed entrance.   	Jacob Bernhardt built this square hipped roof residence in 1882 of buff Doon brick. The wide front verandah, a later addition, is constructed of matching brick below with wood pillars supporting a shallow hipped roof with central pediment. The house is set well back in an ample garden behind a Edwardian wire fence.   Mill	Within easy walking distance of the farm was an abandoned grist mill. Its roof and upper floors had been destroyed by fire. Yet its high stone walls with their vacant window openings stood straight and true. Its ponderous moss-covered water wheel was partially shaded by overhanging willows. A few trickles of water fell from the lip of the timbered dam to a shallow pool. Willows and Balm of Gilead framed the pond which contained only carp, a fish Mr. Kinsey said was not worth eating. Carp had been liberated in the mill-pond fifty or sixty years ago by a Pennsylvania Dutch miller. When our family camped, I felt closer to my parents than I did when in our house at home. Sleeping under canvas, gathering firewood to cook our food, being made aware each day of our dependence on weather and upon each other -- this must be how Indians lived, I told myself.
