"Golden Wedding"
On Wednesday of last week being the fiftieth Anniversary of the wedded life of Mr. and Mrs. John McIntosh, a number of friends took advantage of the occasion and met at their residence on Colquohoun Street. The guest were
Mr. and Mrs. Smith of Wellesley St. London, Ontario;
Mr. and Mrs. Watts, Guelph, Ontario
Thomas, their son,
Mrs. Haugh of Guelph,
Mrs. Hunnard, their daughter from Toronto
and a number of neighbors.
Letters were received from absent members of their family couched in terms of parental respect and expressing sincere regard for their happiness for years to come. Mr. McIntosh first met with his wife at the residence of her brother GOLLANFIELD, Invernessshire, Scotland in the year 1834. After a patriarchial courtship of seven years, Miss Elizabeth Gollan became Mrs. John McIntosh. Continuing in the occupation of farming for a few ears, they decided on leaving their native hills and glens and going far away. Arriving at the shores of the Atlantic, they found a vessel ready to sail for America in which they secured passage and in due time arrived in New York. Being possessed of energy, integrity of character and goodness of soul, besides his large and stalwart appearance, Mr. McIntosh was readily offered employment but having been brought up a farmer he could not lose sight of a valuable certainty for problematical expectations. So, he pushed his way westward in search of land arriving in North Dumfries (Waterloo County) in 1852. He found some of his own clan had preceded him and as the land was good to look upon, he leased a farm now occupied by John Mitchell, 9th Concession. His venture was attended by success and finding farming profitable he some years later purchased a farm a mile east of Ayr which he cultivated with much care and economy and in the course of years he accumulated sufficient of the currency of the country to retire from active life. Purchasing a residence in this Village (Ayr) to which he removed six years ago, he and his respected partner now spend their days in acts of Christian kindness and mull over the events of past years.
Mr. and Mrs. McIntosh were the recipients of may a number of very handsome and valuable gold presents. The cake that adorned the feast was built by our respected Baker and Confectioner, John Murray, and was a marvel of beauty and completeness.
After ample justice had been done to the good things provided, Mr. Robert Findlater presided at the organ and played the Mendelssohn wedding march and other suitable airs with poetic feeling and artistic manipulation. The happy Company separated with warmest wishes for long life and prosperity to Mr. and Mrs. McIntosh.
