She was born in Heysham, England and emigrated to Canada in 1944, first residing in Hamilton, Ont. and subsequently moving to Kitchener.
Mommie Elsie will be lovingly remembered by family and the many children and their families she babysat (over 40 years, they number in the thousands), her Christian Community at Hamilton Seventh Day Adventist Church where she taught Sunday school and was a faithful member ever since 1957.
She is survived by her step Roy (Nancy) Wilhelm; former daughters-in-law, Ursula Scherfer and Kathy Clarke; daughter-in-law, Anne Ng (Clarke) and brother-in-law, Bill Nelis; grandchildren Tim Lee and Valerie (Dan) Sowa and sisters, Sally Barnes and Margaret (Ed) Armor and other family in England. She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Ivan Wilhelm (2004); stepdaughter, Patricia Reid (1997); son, James Clarke (1992); sisters, Renee Nelis, Kathleen Gornall and by her parents, George and Sarah Gornall.
At Elsie's request, cremation has taken place. There will be a gathering to come together in remembrance of Elsie at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 621 King St. W., Kitchener at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2006, followed by a service at 3 p.m. in the chapel, officiated by Pastor Eric Jurians of Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hamilton. A reception at the Family Centre following the service.
