- Kitchener doctor remembered as "gentleman" of kidney care
Waterloo Region Record By Johanna Weidner
KITCHENER - Grand River Hospital staff are mourning the loss of the dedicated doctor who started its kidney program four decades ago.
Dr. Tom Liu died of cancer at home on Saturday, Nov. 5, at age 73.
Liu left an indelible mark on the Kitchener hospital.
At his retirement party in May 2015, a plaque with Liu's picture and a sign bearing his name was unveiled as the renal dialysis unit was named after him....
Liu joined Grand River in 1974, when dialysis programs were offered only in big teaching hospitals. He went to Queen's Park with a delegation that included a patient to speak to Ministry of Health officials.
His pitch was a success, and Grand River got funding to buy dialysis machines, hire nurses and technicians to begin treatment in 1976 \emdash saving patients a trek to Toronto for dialysis....
Liu was diagnosed with cancer 18 months ago, but it barely slowed him down.
"The way he handled it was remarkable," Marissa said. "Until the very last week, my dad was still getting up and doing errands and wanted to go to the hospital."
Liu was born in China and grew up in Australia as the son of a Chinese diplomat. He came to Canada in the 1970s. He worked for a few years in Toronto, where he met his wife when she was working as a nurse, before being offered the opportunity to be Kitchener's first kidney specialist....
