- MACKAN, Rev. Patrick, CR - Died suddenly, November 23, 1990, in his year. Rev. Patrick Mackan was a priest of the Congregation of the Resurrection and a member of the Resurrection College House, Waterloo, Ont. He was born in Niagara Falls, Ont. and attended elementary school in Niagara Falls and Hamilton, Ont. He graduated from Cathedral high school, Hamilton and McMaster University, Hamilton. He also studied at St. Jerome's College, Kitchener, St. Augustine's Seminary, Toronto, Ont. and St. Peter's Seminary, London, Ont. He studied as well at the Ontario College of Education and at the Toronto School of Theology where he received a Doctor Ministry degree in 1981. Father Mackan professed his first vows in the Congregation of the Resurrection in and was ordained a priest in 1957. He spent many years in the educational apostolate as teacher and principal of North Bay College (Scollard Hall) North Bay, Ont., a as principal of St. John's College, Brantford, Ont. and as spiritual director of St. Jerome's high school, Kitchener, Ont. Father Mackan served as Assistant Provincial Superior in the congregation and later did pastoral and special ministry in Bermuda.
More recently, Father Mackan had been a spiritual mentor known internationally for his work of integrating the handicapped with other students. He was a founder and director of the Centre for Integrated Education and Community. He was a consultant to numerous school boards : across Canada and an advisor for programs at the University of Lethbridge, Alta. and the University of British Columbia.
Father Mackan was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Helen (Sheridan) Mackan and two sisters, Margaret Mackan and Mary (Mackan) Holmes.
He is survived by six brothers, Kevin and his wife May of Manitoulin Island, James and his wife Katherine of Sault Ste. Marie, William Mackan of Manitoulin Island, Gordon and his wife Rita of Burlington, Thomas Mackan of Hamilton and Paul Mackan of Ottawa and one sister, Sheila Land and her husband John of Hamilton. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visitation at the SchreiterS-androck Funeral Home and Chapel, 51 Benton at Church Street, Kitchener, today (Tuesday) until 3:30 p.m., when tranfer will be made to St. Mary's RC Church (elevator available) for further visitation, with the community wake service at 8 p.m., followed by the Waterloo Knights of Columbus scripture service at 8:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated by the Very Rev. Sutherland MacDonald, CR, at St. Mary's Church, Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m. Interment in the congregation community plot of Kitchener Mount Hope cemetery.
