- KENNEDY, Florentina (nee Materi) Flora passed peacefully to be with her Lord on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Sunnyside Home, Kitchener at the age of 97. Born January 13, 1917 in Vibank, Saskatchewan, daughter of Anton Materi and Anastasia Herauf. Loving wife of the late James Clifford Kennedy and cherished step mom to Marlene Kennedy (Jim Wilken) and Terry Kennedy (Margo). Sister to Kay (the late Francis), Ann (the late Guss), Frank (Ruth), Jack (Cathy), Tony (Cheryl) and Ted. Much loved by grandchildren Jody Cybulski (Kathryn), Tammy Pacheco (Paul), Tracey, Michael and A.J. Kennedy and great-grandchildren Luke, Jack and Lauren. Lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews and Flora's very special niece Veronica Materi (Edward Biding). Also remembered by many great-nieces and nephews and her brotherin- law Ernie. Predeceased by siblings Walter (Wynn), Joe (Cathy), Clara, Max (Janet), Linda (Philip) and Pauline. Flora was the eldest of 13 children and at the age of 13 entered the boarding school of Sisters of Notre Dame. At the age of 20 she became a teaching nun, Sister Mary Anthony and taught in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia until 1979 when she left the Order. Flora then studied at University of Waterloo and also became a hairdresser with an outstanding award. Flora combined this hairdressing talent with homemaker services for seniors and during this time met Cliff, a widower and they married in 1990 and were together until his passing in 1997. Flora has touched many lives with her kindness, generosity and immerse sense of humour and shared her artistic and musical talents to bring joy and fun filled times with family and friends. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 from 12 p.m. - 12: 45 p.m. at the Henry Walser Funeral Home , 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467 followed by a memorial service in the chapel of the funeral home, at 1 p.m. led by Pastor Emerson of Seventh Day Adventists. A reception will be held after the service. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family interment at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sunnyside Foundation or Waterloo Seventh Day Adventists, or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home). A very sincere thank you is extended to Dr. Day and 5th floor nurses at St. Mary's Hospital and the wonderful nurses and staff at Sunnyside Home along with Dr. Landy for their warm and special care for Flora.
