  • Notes
    • Regarding July 13's Flash from the Past, Lorne Brubacher noted that his grandfather Henry Brubacher's cousin, Samuel, owned the farmland that Cecil Peoli used as a landing field in 1912. Sam's farmhouse and barn were located near the head of Onward Avenue, approximately where the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium is now located. Some of the Brubacher farmland, which once abutted the Poor House property, is now under the Conestoga Expressway, he added.

one of Kitchener's first airplane crashes, there were no injuries. Like our fellow Kitchenerites a century ago, we can savour the sight of an aerial machine brought to grief.

Only seven years earlier, the first airplane demonstrations ever seen here had occurred during 1912's cityhood celebrations. Intrepid American aviator Cecil Peoli electrified young and old with a week of aerial acrobatics. But airplanes remained a novelty and by 1919 few locals had ever seen one; only a handful had actually flown.
