Notes |
- Magdalena or Madeleine, was the daughter of Francois Joseph and Magdalena (Bächer) Peter Schmitt. On November 26, 1830, she married Joseph Schlegel (b.April 30, 1809 in Froeningen, Alsace, France) at Ste. Croix-aux-Plaine, France.
Magdalena and Joseph had nine children of which three survived infancy: Magdalena, b.1832; Joseph, b.1837; and Anna, b.1843.
On June 19, 1854 the Schlegel family emigrated to New York from France. From there they spent a year with Joseph's brother Nicolaus Schlegel and family in Ontario before moving to Iowa and eventually buying land on August 21, 1856 in Grove Township, Davis County.
Around 1866, Magdalena's husband Joseph passed away. A year later, her son Joseph was called to take on the duties of elder/bishop in Henry County, Iowa. Her daughter, Anna and family, lived adjacent to Joseph in Henry County and so she then went to live with her daughter.
Magdalena's first daughter, Magdalena, had also originally immigrated to Iowa with her husband and family until her husband was called to minister to the Defenseless Mennonite Church near Edna Mills, Indiana around 1865-70. In 1874, Anna passed away and so Magdalena then decided to go live with her eldest daughter in Indiana where she remained until passing away in 1878.
The Schlegel family has always pronounced our last name with a silent 'ch' which would explain why Magdalena's headstone was inscribed as "Slegel". Apparently the inscriber engraved it as he heard it.
