    • Geoffrey Charles Spackman

      December 9, 1926 - September 13, 2023

Passed away peacefully after a full and active life on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Grand River Hospital, at age 96. Survived by his children Elizabeth (Eric Vanderkruk), Robert (Judy Halpern), and Murray (Janice Rigg). Loving grandfather of Larissa (Japo), Nathan (Rahel), Ben, Brett, Taylor (Robin), and Melanie. He was thrilled to be great-grandfather to Marley and Jameson. Also survived by his brother Anthony (Tony) and his wife Caryl in England, sister-in-law Roslyn of Florida, and dear friends Lois Abbott and Sue Spackman. Predeceased by beloved wife Adrienne (nee Shenton) of 50 years, parents Charles and Irene (nee Stretton) Spackman, and sister Elizabeth Anne. Geoff was born December 9, 1926, in his parents' home in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom. After two years' service in the British army, he graduated in 1954 in medicine from Cambridge University and London University, the seventh generation of doctors in his family. While interning in London he met his future wife Adrienne Shenton who was a nurse at the same hospital. They married in 1955 and emigrated to Canada the following year. Geoff interned in London, Ontario, to earn his licence and Certificate of the College of Family Physicians and moved to Kitchener to open a practice as a Family Physician. He and his young wife started their family soon after. During his 35 years as a Family Physician, Geoff also performed the roles of Assistant Director of Family Medicine for 4th year students and part time lecturer at the University of Western Ontario, currently Western University, and he was the first Chief of Family Medicine at K-W Hospital, now Grand River Hospital and St Mary's Hospital. Geoff was a charter member of the Kitchener Squash Club and Conestoga Sailing Club, winning numerous championships at both. He and Adrienne were also North American and Ontario sailing champions, and he celebrated his 70th birthday while sailing across the Atlantic in a 36-foot sailboat. He also enjoyed alpine skiing into his 90th year, as well as canoe tripping, tennis, racquetball, cross country skiing, bridge, and Scottish Country Dancing. Geoff and Adrienne travelled widely, visiting friends and colleagues around the world. They especially enjoyed their time at their cottage on Lake Eugenia. He was a dedicated volunteer, and especially valued his ten years working with Meals on Wheels. Special thanks to Dr. Lenferna and Registered Nurse Phil at the Grand River emergency department for their kindness and understanding. A Celebration of Geoff's Life will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the Fireside Reception Room. Cremation will have taken place and a private family interment will be held at Parkview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, condolences for the family and donations to Grand River Hospital, St Mary's Hospital, and Meals on Wheels may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street S., Waterloo, at www.erbgood.com.
