Notes |
- December 21, 1966- THREE CAR CRASH KILLS PROMINENT NEWMARKET TRIO.
Three prominent Newmarket residents were killed early Sunday morning, December 18, 1966 as they were returning home from a family gathering. Well known in civic and athletic circles in Newmarket, Charles VanZant died early Sunday morning December 18, 1966 as the result of an accident on the Don Mills Road at the Ravenshoe Sideroad. He was 56. Charlie was born at Ayr, Ontario, and came to Newmarket while quite young. Mr. VanZant worked at Office Specialty and was in charge of the upholstery work in Department 29. Mr. VanZant's greatest thrill came when he was coaching Newmarket girls' teams to three provincial Intermediate 'B' championships. Newmarket won the title in 1953-55-56. There couldn't be another like him in softball. "Peaches" enlivened every game. He was a member of Newmarket Town Council from 1949-1954 inclusive. He was also an honourary member of Branch 426 of the Canadian Legion. He married Jane Ann Royan, a native of Scotland in 1935 with the wedding ceremony held at the King George Hotel, Main Street, Newmarket. Mrs. VanZant was killed in the same accident along with Mrs. Ross Eves. Mrs. VanZant was employed at the King George Hotel and at Atkinson's Drug Store on Main Street for many years. Mr. VanZant is survived by a son, Laurie, two daughters, Mary Lou, Mrs. Warren Townsley, and Sharon, his father, Ross VanZant, three brothers, three sisters, Kathleen, Mrs. Melvin Henry, William and Jack, three Ruddock, Claire, Mrs. Joseph Pollock, and Margaret, Mrs. Ted Arnold.
