JANSEN, Catharine (Zingshelm)
The grim reaper, Death, has again entered one of the homes of our village and taken away one of the inmates. This time, however, it was not a person with the bloom of youth yet upon the cheek, not one in the prime of life ready to do a large share of life's work but an aged way-weary pilgrim, whose life work was done, who had borne the burden and heat of the day and had long waited for the summons. We refer to "grandmother Jansen" who died early Tuesday morning.
Catharine Zingshelm was born at Wiskirchen, in Rhinish Prussia, Germany, on February 13th 1813. In 1830 she was married to Matthias Jansen, with whom and four children she started on the tedious journey to America on the 22nd of May 1847. The journey was made in eight different vessels and took until July 24th; only two days' travel was by land, one day at the beginning and one day at the end, from Hamilton to Preston. The family lived for some years at Preston, than for various periods near Breslau, at the "toll-bridge" and at Glenallan. In these years they endured many of the hardships of pioneer life. In 1867 they moved to Elmira where a deceased has since lived. Her husband died in 1883 and since that time she has made her home with her eldest son, Mr. Peter Jansen.
Deceased was the mother of eight sons, three of whom are dead. The living are: Peter, Elmira; Matthias, Quincy, Ill.; August, Centerville; John, Fresno, Cal.; and Joseph, Preston. Besides these she is survived by 22 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
She has been totally blind for about twenty years and for several years past had been unable to leave her room, being in bed most of the time. May sweet rest be hers.
