Recover Body Of Drowned Hockey Player
Charles "Babe" Siebert Drowned In Lake Huron Last Friday

The body of Charles "Babe" Siebert, widely known professional hockey star who was drowned last Friday afternoon in Lake Huron at St. Joseph was located about 40 feet from where he sank in 10 feet of water. The body was discovered by his brother (Frank of Detroit and Albert Hess, of Zurich, after dragging had been continued for three days.

Siebert, 34 years of age, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Siebert, of Zurich. He was home in Zurich where a reunion of the family was to be held on Sunday.

Shortly before 4 p. m. Siebert with his two daughters, Judie, 11, and Joan, 10, went with Clayton Hoffman, of Zurich, to the lake.

They went in bathing at St. Joseph. When one of the children saw the inflated tire was using for a float carried out from her depth by waves that were rolling she asked her father to recover it.

Siebert swam out and was about to grab the tire which had floated about 150 feet from shore and around the end of the pier, when he shouted for help.

Hoffman swam out to go to his assistance but he sank 'before Hoffman arrived at the spot.

"Babe" Siebert was born in Plattsville in 1904, but his family had resided in Zurich since he was a lad, and he was always regarded as a "Zurich boy."

He got his start in both hockey and baseball in Zurich, then played at -Seaforth and on the Kitchener junior O. H. A. team. Later he played for Niagara Falls and then turned professional with Montreal Maroons in 1925, remaining with that team until 1932 when he was traded to New York Rangers.

In the 1933-34 season he was traded to Boston Bruins and moved back to defense from right wing. He, along with his defence partner, Eddie Shore, was picked for the N. H. L. all-star team in the season of 1935-36. He repeated in the 1936-37 and 1937-38 seasons. During the summer of 1936 he was traded to Les Canadiens.

Only recently he was named coach-manager of the team.

The funeral was held in Kitchener on Wednesday afternoon.

The late hockey star was married to Berne Millhausen, of Kitchener, who survives him with two young daughters, besides his parents and several brothers and sisters.
