    • NO, HE ISN'T TRYING FOR THE BIG ONE -- RENT FRANZ MARES AN EXEMPLARY JON OF EXTINGUISHING HIS BIRTHDAY CANDLES.

      BERT FRANZ RETIRES

Waterloo operator Bert Franz , a spry veteran of two world wars, retired from the Commission January 29. Since January 13 happened to be his birthday, his family, co-workers and local municipal officials threw what could be called a party-reception-dinner-dance , and general whing-ding.

The general atmosphere might he judged by the following exchange: whing-dinger

1-- Are you (Bert) prepared to say a couple of words? "Whing dinger

2--"Heck, he's been writing them for weeks."

This wasn't quite fair, since Bert hadn't known the do was on. His wife, Irene, told him they were going out for Chinese food, and they might as well drop into the Legion for a minute. He has since announced that "from now on I won't believe a damn word she says."

Bert, who claims to be 70, was born in Doon, just south of Kitchener. He served with the 71st Battalion, and 118th and the Army Medical Corps in the First World War, and was a disciplinarian, holding the rank of sergeant in the RCAF, in the Second World War. (Before you pick up the phone, no, he wasn't a flight sergeant.

He worked for more than 30 years as a cooper with Canada Barrels and Kegs. From 1952 he was an employee of the City of Waterloo sewage plant, which the Commission took over on April 1, 1960.

Bert contends lie's going to take it easy for a while, but after watching him dance everybody else under the table, that's hard to believe. (We don't believe his story about the black paint either.)

Footnote: The philosophical highlight of the evening was Bert's announcement, between sips, that "if you work at the Water Resources, you have to drink a certain amount of water.
