- Andrew Browning Baird (1855-1940)
Born at Motherwell, Ontario on 6 October 1855, the son of Charles and Agnes (Browning) Baird. He studied at Upper Canada College and at the Universities of Toronto (BA 1877), Edinburgh (BD 1881), Leibzig (Germany), and Knox College, Toronto (DD). He married Penelope Campbell Cook of Galt, Ontario.
He became a Presbyterian Minister in 1881 then moved to Western Canada, stopping briefly in Winnipeg on his way to Edmonton. After 1887 he taught Church History at Manitoba College. He was President of the Historical Society from 1893 to 1895, the Manitoba Horticultural Society from 1896 to 1899 and, in 1916-17 was Moderator of the Presbyterian Church. He had three daughters and one son as a result of his 1903 marriage to E. J. Grant. His son was killed in World War One. Baird died in 1940 in Winnipeg. His extensive papers are held at the University of Winnipeg Archives, with additional papers at the Archives of Manitoba.

BAIRD, Rev. Andrew Browning (Presb.) is the eld. s. of Chas. Baird by his wife, Agnes Browning, and was b. at Motherwell, Ont., Oct. 6, 1855. Ed. at U. C. Coll., at Toronto Univ. (B.A., 1877 ; M.A., 1880), he studied Theol. at the Univ. of Edinburgh (Ph.D.), and took a post-graduate course at Leipzig. Ordained 1881, he, in the same year, founded the cong. at Edmonton, Alb., of which he was pastor, 1881-87. Thereafter he was lecturer in Man. Coll., and first pastor of Augustine Ch., Winnipeg, 1887-92; and became Prof. of Logic and Political Economy and Classics, as well as Prof. of Apologetics, Ch. History and the Hebrew Language, in Man. Coll., 1892. He was for some yrs. a mem. of the Bd. of Ed., N.W.T., and is now a mem. of the Council of the Univ. of Man., and an examiner in the Univ.
