  English man traces family ties to Kitchener home child For Britain's poorest, getting a fresh start meant coming to Canada. Felix Francis Hillier was no exception. On board the Dominion, he departed from Liverpool on Aug. 2, 1906. Upon arrival to Toronto, he made his way to Waterloo Region and began working on farms. He was just nine years old. His story is similar to close to 120,000 other orphans who crossed the Atlantic Ocean to work the Canadian soil. Called "home children," some went without proper care, shelter or wages. Felix, though, was adopted by a Kitchener couple. "It seems like Felix did quite well. That's a good thing because he has quite a sad story," said Mike Hillier, 68. Felix's great grandfather is Hillier's great great grandfather, so they'd be second cousins once removed. Before coming to the region, Felix was living in abject poverty in London with his father, grandmother and two sisters, Martha Amelia and Ethel May. Through research, Hillier discovered the five of them were living in a single room with only a bed frame covered in rags and a box. In desperation, Felix's father, who was only earning 12 shillings a week, sent the children to orphanages. Felix went to a Dr. Barnardo's home and then was sent to work in Canada. Hillier found that after Felix served as a home child, he joined the Canadian army in 1915 and fought overseas. He got married to Hilda Victoria Burnip and had three children Jeanette, Robert and Helen who'd be Hillier's third cousins.... He does know that Felix died in Kitchener and was buried in Bruce County in 1983. His wife Hilda was buried in Collingwood.... Beattie, S. (2017).
