- ANOTHER FATAL ACCIDENT AT KITCHENER RAILWAY CROSSING
C. N. R. Train On Wednesday Evening Hits Motor Car Driven By Homer Hymmen, Killing His Wife, Son, Ward aged 13, and Severely Injuring Husband and Sons Keith and Eric, and Maid, Sarah Leis.
One of the worst level railway crossing accidents in years occurred at the Lancaster street C. N. R. crossing at Kitchener at 7.10 o'clock Wednesday evening. June 24th, when Homer Hymmen's car was struck by a train, carrying it for about fity feet and throwing it into the embankment, turning the car completely around. Ward Hymmen, 13 year old son of Mr. and Mra. Homer Hymmen of 95 North Queen St.. who was seated beside his father, had his right arm practically torn off above the elbow when he was found by Dr. Hamilton, who immediately severed it. He also suffered a fractured skull and died at the K. & W. hospital about four hours later.
The lad's mother, Mrs. Homer Hymmen, was rendered unconscious and was rushed to the hospital suffering from severe injuries to her head and body. She regained consciousness some time after reaching the institution but the shock was too much for her system and she passed away Saturday morning. Keith Hymmen and Eric Hymmen. aged 12 and 10 years respectively. brothers of the dead lad, were also rushed to the hospital. An X ray taken showed that the former had a fracture of the right leg below the hip and right arm while the latter was badly shaken up and may be suffering internal injuries. The father, Homer Hymmen, suffered two broken ribs, but refused to go to bed, being greatly distracted by the distressing accident. Miss Sarah Leis of Wellesley maid in the Hymmen home, suffered several fractured ribs and a severe. shaking up. An X ray was taken to determine the extent of her injuries.
Did Not Hear Bell.
The Canadian National train had just left the Kitchener station, and released the brakes, starting to increase its speed when it approached the crossing giving the usual warning by whistle and bells. The Hymmen car and another car almost opposite, driven by Andrew Bruder of New Hamburg, approached the crossing at about 20 to 25 miles an hour. Hymmen apparently was intent on not striking the motor car alongside of him and owing to the noise did not hear the whistle. The driver of the Bruder car saw the danger first and stopped but Hymmen, when he saw the approaching train, swerved sharply to the left. The train, however, hit the car in the centre, throwing the occupants into the embankment. Mr. Hymmen was the first to recover an immediately inquired for his family, most of whom had been thrown farther up the track. The injured were rushed to the hospital by private motor cars on the arrival of Drs Hagmeier, Gillespie and Hamilton. The train crew comprising Conductor Ward, engineer Ross and brakeman Penerley, gave all possible assistance.
Bert Mitchell of Waterloo and Herman Schenck, who resides near the crossing were eye witneses of the accident. The latter stated that there had been many near accidents at this crossing, which should be protected by a watchman or gates.
Inquest Held.
The inquest ordered by coroner Dr. Kalbfleisch was held on Tuesday.
