  Jack Sharp Banks October 19, 1934 - April 6, 2010, "A true gentleman and a gentle man" It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true gentleman, Jack Banks, following a long, valiant journey with cancer. Growing up in a small village near Beaver Valley, Ontario, there is not a soul that encountered Jack who would not know he was from Flesherton. He was very proud of his ties to that community and often spoke fondly of his friends, family and many early memories. He left Flesherton when he was 18 to pursue baseball in Oakville. Jack was one of the most talented, hard throwing pitchers of that time and was scouted by the farm teams, for the Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals. The opportunity to stay in Canada and work with Ford Motor Company, along with his small town roots, made Jack forego a move to the U.S. and thus his baseball career culminated in winning the Ontario Senior A Major championship in 1956. While playing ball, he mentored and coached young players and he also began his automotive career. In 1953, Jack began as a mail boy at Ford, progressing very quickly to a coveted position of Buyer. In 1962, he left Oakville for Cambridge to join Kralinator Filters in Sales. Kralinator was sold to Sheller Globe Corporation and Jack was appointed Vice President and General Sales Manager of Sheller Globe Canada. In 1999, he retired as Vice President-Sales & Marketing, Service Parts Division, Dana Canada (formerly Sheller Globe Corp). During his 46 years in the automotive industry, Jack generously shared his experiences and knowledge, belonging to numerous associations. He also served on the United Way of Cambridge Automotive Association Golf Tournament committee for over 15 years. Jack traveled to many parts of the world and met numerous interesting people. He had the incredible talent of being able to recollect every detail of his experiences and encounters. His phenomenal memory would allow for amazing tales of adventure, peppered with funny anecdotes and specifics that made him a truly talented raconteur, enchanting listeners for hours. He loved people and was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word, seeing goodness in all and remembering the important details of each person's life and interests. Jack was a gentle man with dignity, grace and great humility, he did not covet material possessions but was proud of all he was able to achieve coming from a simple background. Over his 75 years, Jack took pride in his Scottish heritage and had keen interest in athletics, which included hockey, baseball, curling and golf. He was a member of the Galt Country Club for over 48 years. In addition, he loved music and was a voracious reader amassing a wide variety of knowledge on many, varied subjects. He had great pride in our country of Canada. Above all, Jack was a devoted and loving family man. The greatest pride of his life was his soul mate and wife of over 45 years, Frania (Hejno) and their two children, Lara Lynn, Cambridge (Jim McGuin) and Dorian Jay, Vancouver. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Jean (Haxton) and George Banks, as well as his six brothers and one sister and Frania's parents, Julia and Ignacy Hejno of Burlington. A private family funeral will take place. A "Celebration of Jack's Life" will be held at the Galt Country Club (beside Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Cambridge, ON) at 2: 00 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, 2010. Cambridge Times 15 Apr 2010
