    • Aylmer.\emdash Trinity.\emdash At the recent Sunday school entertainment, which took place in this parish, the Rev. J. W. J. Andrew, who has just resigned the living to take up work in Berlin, was, on the eve of his departure for his new sphere of labour. mode the recipient of a clock bearing this inscription: "To the Rev. J. W. J. Andrew. as a slight recognition of an eight years' faithful incumbency of Trinity church, Aylmer, December, 1901." This clock was accompanied by an address expressing appreciation of his work in Aylmer, regret at his departure, and good wishes for the future of him-self and Mrs. Andrew. It was signed by Jas. G. Heiter, A. Bisset Thom, John J. Kingston, M.D.; James M. Wrong, George Youell, H. E. Caulfield, H. A. Ambridge, A. E Haines, A. H. Backhouse and E. A. Miller.

Berlin.\emdash St. John's.\emdash The wardens elected are Messrs. E. P. Gower and J. Hammett. Lay delegates, Dr. D. S. Bowlby and Mr. John Fennell. The wardens' accounts showed a small balance on the right aide. A select vestry was appointed. The ground lost during the vacancy of the Parish has been more than regained by the diligence and evident devotion to his work of the new rector, the Rev. J. W. J. Andrew. The number of communicants on Easter day was the largest in the history of the parish, 45 at 8 am., and 49 at the noon celebration. It is to be feared, however, that the retrograde action of the vestry in consenting to the allotment of pews will hamper his efforts.

THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST (ANGLICAN), KITCHENER 1856 - 1956

      by Elaine Smith

The year 1956 marks the centennial of the parish of the Church of St. John The Evangelist (Anglican). As nearly as we can tell, the history of the Anglican Church in this community began with a visit of Dean Boomer in 1848. The Dean took services until 1850 in the old mill, German Mills, now Parkway. In 1856, the Reverend Mr. Campbell (father of the well-known Canadian poet, Wilfred Campbell), came to what is now Kitchener and held the first Anglican services here in a printing office on King Street East. It was in 1861, during the Rectorate of his successor, the Reverend Elam Rush Stimson, that the first Church in the parish was built. This was a brick building, located on the site of the present Church. There were a number of Rectors who were in charge of the parish in the succeeding years and in 1893, the Reverend Frederick J. Steen assumed his duties here. During his encumbency the present Church was built, being opened for services by Bishop Baldwin on the first Sunday in October, 1894. Since the opening of the present Church, there have been five Rectors: the Reverend Carl S. Smith, the Reverend J. W. J. Andrew, the Reverend H. M. Lang-Ford, the Reverend J. N. H. Mills and the present Rector, the Reverend Canon C. C. W. Mixer.
