  FIGUEIREDO , Joao Braga 'John' Passed away peacefully, on Saturday, May 14 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer and lung disease. Surrounded by his family, John heard the call of God and has found the tranquility and well being that illness had taken from him. John was a loving and caring husband, father and avo in his 49 years of marriage. Left behind with heavy hearts are his wife Rosa, his children Anna and George (Dalila) and granddaughters Melanie and Sarah. Predeceased by his parents, Manuel Pedro Figueiredo (1970) and Ana Soares Braga (1990) and his brother, Antonio (1955). He will be sadly missed by his brothers and sisters Jose (late Gloria), Manuel (Ermalinda), Bernardino (Eliza) Evaristo (Fatima), Maria Andrade (late Manuel), Ines Figueiredo (Manuel) of Cambridge and Angelo (Maria do Carmo) and Jaime (Livramento) of Portugal. He also leaves fond memories with his large extended family including his brothers-in-law, Manuel Figueiredo (Beatriz), Bernardino Reis (Virginia) and Frank Reis (Maria) and sisters-in-law, Emilia Moreira of Cambridge, Virginia Reis of Santa Maria and Ana Andrade of Hudson Mass., along with 59 nieces and nephews. John was born and raised in Santa Maria Acores and immigrated to Canada in 1959. He married in 1962 and relocated to Cambridge (Galt) from Leamington, in 1965. He worked many years in the construction industry and spent the last 15 years of his work life, at Mitton Vinyl where he was affectionately known to his friends as 'Scooter'. His retirement allowed him to enjoy working on his large garden and spending time spoiling his granddaughters. From humble beginnings, John was determined to create a good life for his family and he succeeded. He was a very hard worker and took pleasure in the simple things in life. His greatest pastimes were spending time with family and playing cards. It was these items that he found most comforting, during his illness. Those that knew him well are left to cherish memories of a man of true character and optimism. It was truly amazing to watch his perseverance and sense of humour during a very difficult illness. Rested at Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas Street, Cambridge, where the family received friends on Monday May 16, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Rosary was recited in the funeral home chapel on Monday evening, at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial, was held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Elgin St. S., Cambridge Tuesday May 17, at 10 a.m..
