    • John W. Smith

      John W. Smith, a well-known resident of Goderich, passed away at his home on East street on Tuesday evening, May 20th, in his seventy-third year. Mr. Smith has been in failing health for some time and for the last sixteen weeks he was confined to his bed. Deceased was born at Dungannon and when a young man moved to Goderich, where for about forty-two years conducted the well-known Smith bakery. He retired from active business 6 years ago, when his son, Mr. E. G. Smith, took over the business. Mr. Smith took an active interest in horse racing and was well known among the horsemen of the Province. He owned a number of race horses at one time, had acted as an old official at many race meets, and was one of the most active members of the Goderich Race Association. He was a member of the local Masonic, Orange and Oddfellows lodges. Surviving are his wife, three daughters and two sons: Mrs. Hilton Shuyler, of Kitchener; Mrs. F. Allen, Mrs. L. Maskell and Mr. E. G. Smith, of Goderich, and Mr. R. J. Smith, of Guelph. One son, Halliday, passed away in December last. Two sisters and two brothers survive, Miss E. Smith and Mrs. Chas. Kenyon, of Goderich, Mrs. Jos. Smith, of Cleveland, and Mr. Ezekial Smith of Marceline, Missouri. In religion the late Mr. Smith was a Presbyterian, being a member of Knox church. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon to Maitland cemetery.

      The deceased was well-known in New Hamburg, being a frequent visitor to town while his daughter. Mrs. Hilton Shuyler resided here and also while attending the local horse races in years gone by in which kingly sport he took a great interest. His many friends in New Hamburg are sorry to learn of his death.

      Lulu Schuler

      Mrs. Lulu Schuler (nee Lulu Smith), wife of the late Hilton Schuler, died at Alexandria Marine and General Hospital, Goderich, on Sunday, Feb. 9. She was 81.

      Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Bessie) Allen, and Mrs Lou (Olive) Maskell, both of Goderich.

      Funeral services were held at Stiles Funeral Home on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Temporary entombment was in the Maitland cemetery chapel, with burial to take place at a later date in Riverside cemetery, New Hamburg.
