  • Notes
    • Morris Lutz was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1806 and came to Canada in 1829, settling first in Flamboro where he carried on a foundry business in partnership with Mr. McInlay. He came to Galt in 1844 and upon arrival assumed the foremanship of the machinery department in the newly created Dumfries Foundry owned by J.K. Andrews and James Crombie. Soon afterward he formed a partnership with Duncan Fisher in the The Galt Foundry and Machine Works, the town's first foundry which had been organized by Mr. Fisher in 1842. The company became Lutz, Cook and Co. in 1857 when Mr. Fisher was replaced in the partnership by Peter Cook. Mr. Lutz took a strong interest in local politics and was elected to sit on Galt's first village council in 1850. He continued to sit on council in 1851 and 1852 and occupied the reeve's seat in 1853. Mr. Lutz was the first mayor of the Town of Galt, serving in that post from the time of Galt's incorporation as a town in 1857 to 1859 and again from 1865 to 1867. He also served as a member of council in 1860 and again from 1869 to 1872 and as the town reeve in 1861 and 1862. He was the first president of the Galt Mechanics Institute, the forerunner of the Galt Public Library, and was elected as part of the Galt delegation to direct the Gore Mutual Fire Insurance Co. in June 1863. It was this group that brought the Gore Mutual Fire Insurance Co. to Galt later that year. Mr. Lutz remained a director of the company until 1867. He died on August 30, 1876 and is buried in Mount View Cemetery.

      DUMFRIES REFORMER, SEPT. 6, 1876:

Death or Morris C. Lutz. - It was with feelings of unusual sorrow that on Wednesday last the people of Galt learned of the demise of M. C. Lutz; Esq., which occurred at 8.o'clock on the morning of that day. For more than a week previous to his death, Mr. Lutz had been confined to bed by a painful illness, which from the first threatened a fatal termination Mr. Lutz, who has filled a very important place in the history of Galt, and will long be remembered as one of its most enterprising citizens, was born near Elizabeth town, New Jersey, in the year 1806. In 1829 he came to Canada, settling in West Flamboro, where, in company with a Mr. McInlay, he carried on the foundry business for several years, and where he married Miss Neff, the lady who now survives him. In 1844 he assumed the foremanship of the machinery department in the foundry of the late J. K. Andrews, of Galt, and soon leaving the position, entered into partnership with Mr. Fisher, of the Galt Foundry on North Water Street. After a successful career, Mr. Fisher retired from the business, into which the late Mr. Peter Cook and Mr. James Cowan, of Clochmohr, were taken as partners. Mr. Cook's sudden death by accident in 186_ terminated this partnership, and from that date till 1878, when Mr. Lutz finally retired from business, he and Mr. Cowan carried the Foundry on with its usual success. As a public man, Mr. Lutz was very prominent and very useful. He entered the Council of Galt when our municipality had a village government, and from that time till within a few years past he was almost constantly a member of the Council. In 1853 he was elected Reeve of Galt, and so great was the public esteem in which his services were held that in 1867, on the erection of Galt into a town, Mr. Lutz was elected first Mayor. This position he held for three years successfully, on two occasions being elected without opposition After retiring to a less prominent position at the Council board he was again elected to the Mayoralty in 1866, and filled that office till 1869, when he retired for a time to private life. He soon again resumed his duties as a councillor and continued in this position till a few years ago. Mr. Lutz's merits as a private citizen and public officer are well known by the people of Galt and also by outsiders. Generous and honorable, he won a warm place in the hearts of those with whom be came in contact, a fact well established by the universal and sincere expressions of regret uttered when his death became known throughout the town. In his public capacity, whether as Mayor, Councillor or Justice of the Peace, Mr. Lutz was held in general esteem. Public spirited as a man well could be, and almost enthusiastically studious of the welfare of the town, he did mulch to advance the interest of Galt - his conduct in that respect affording a contrast as well as an example to some others placed in a position where, like him, they could prove very useful, and like him, be missed when the curtain drops on the last scene of life. Mr. Lutz was exceedingly well informed on municipal law and on his duties as a magistrate. With a strong instinct in favor of right administered the law with a kindly and yet determined hand. His duties as a magistrate were extended over many years - but few perhaps have retired from that office with fewer enemies or more friends than the subject of this notice. His funeral took place on Friday afternoon, and seldom, if ever, has there been present so many prominent citizens of the town, and gentlemen from a distance. The Town Council, which had met on Wednesday evening and passed resolutions of sympathy with Mr. Lutz's family in their bereavement, attended in a body. The Rev. Messers. Bentley, of Galt, Torrance, of Guelph, and MacDonald, of Elora, were present and assisted at the funeral service. The town hall was surmounted by a flag at ha1f mast, while the business places of the town were closed for an hour or two out of respect for the deceased. As the long funeral procession wound its way through streets and out to the Cemetery, it may truly be said there was not a single on-looker but felt a more than ordinary regret that the familiar form of the kindly old gentleman would be seen on our streets no more.
