    • MANN, WILLIAM F. “PAT”

      Guelph Man is Fatally Hurt

Almost instantly, on Thursday morning, November 15, 1923, opposite the farm of Louis Hyndman on the Galt Road, a few miles from Paris. He was driving a Cadillac truck at a rate said to be 35 miles an hour when, in dense fog, in attempting to make a turn, the car ran into the ditch. The machine was completely overturned and Mr. Mann was pinned underneath. He had with him a boy named “Buster” MacKenzie. The lad was unhurt and going to Mr. Hyndman’s house, he secured assistance. Mr. Mann, who was rendered unconscious, was released from under the car and Mr. Hyndman started to take him to the Willett Hospital at Paris, but he died on the way. Mr. Mann was night watchman for McNamara Bros. and Thornton, who have a contract on the Paris highway construction work. Mr. Mann left Guelph several months ago for Paris to work for McNamara and Thornton, the contractors who constructed three miles of the Guelph-Hamilton highway south of the Ontario Agricultural College, a couple of years ago. While in Guelph, he resided with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Mann of Lane St. Before leaving the city, he was employed with Mr. Charles F. Ostrander, dealer in builders’ supplies, 51 Bellevue Ave., as a truck driver. He was a young man in his 23rd year and had many friends. He was in Guelph visiting his parents and it was on his way back to Paris that he met with the accident. The family formerly lived near Morriston, where Mr. Mann was well known and had many friends. His father left this morning for Paris to bring back his body. Besides his parents, he leaves a sister, Mrs. Bradley at Hornby and four brothers, Thomas, Robert and Douglas of Guelph and Leonard of Morriston. The funeral from his father’s residence, Eramosa Rd. in Guelph on Sat., Nov. 17th at 1: 30, conducted by Rev. J. A. MacKenzie, assisted by Rev. A. M. Hamilton, former pastor at Winterbourne, was largely attended. Pallbearers: four brothers, Thomas, Robert, Douglas and Leonard; and a brother-in-law, Mr. Bradley. Interment in Winterbourne Cemetery.
