St. Agatha Orphanage, postcard 1908, now demolished. - In 1858 he established St. Agatha Orphanage in a vacant log building after nine children from the same family were orphaned. By 1868 there were enough changes to warrant the construction of a large stone building next to the church, complete with a school chapel and dormitories. In 1871 Fr. Funcken applied to the School Sisters of Notre Dame (S.S.N.D.) in Milwaukee to come and provide instruction, stability and management of the Catholic orphanage. They consented and with their arrival thus began a close long-term relationship between the S.S.N.D. and the community. For many years the people of St. Agatha were the sole support of the orphanage and school. In 1965 the orphanage was closed and the facility incorporated as Notre Dame of St. Agatha.

  • Notes
    • The death of Mother Superior Joachime, of the St. Agatha orphan's home, early this week has caused a profound gloom of sorrow in this section. Her death was immediately caused by dropsy, although she had suffered some time from the effects of paralysis. The funeral took place on Tuesday. All the orphanage children, the school children, about 30 school sisters, besides a number of sisters from a distance marched in a solemn procession to the church. The requiem and burial service were conducted by Rev. Jos. Mey and Rev. Hubert Aeymens, assisted by Revs. George Brohman, Theo. Spetz and Chas. Klefer. Mother Joachime had long been connected with this parish and was beloved by all who knew her. Deceased was born in Prussia in 1836, emigrating to this country when about 18 years of age and entered sisterhood in 1859. At first she was stationed in the western States, but was finally given charge of this orphan school, where she distinguished herself by her legislative ability and her patient Christian bearing under the trying duties which devolved upon her.
