SUDDEN DEATH OF MRS. JOHN WATSON OF AYR

Intelligence received here on Thursday morning last of the sudden death of Mrs. John Watson, of Ayr, in New York city, that morning. No particulars were received at the time, and the news caused a painful shock to the many friends of the deceased lady and her husband throughout the province. We have since learned that Mr. and Mrs. Watson, accompanied relatives to New York, about six weeks ago. For some time, it appears, Mrs. Watson had become imbued with the idea that a cancer was growing in her right breast, and before going to New York an examination by a local physician confirmed that suspicion, although the deceased lady was not made acquainted with the purport of the examination at the time. Arriving in New York a specialist was consulted, who made no secret of the existence of cancer, and recommended Mrs. Watson's removal to a leading hospital where a specialty was made of such cases. Here an operation was successfully performed a few days afterwards (about five weeks ago.) The patient continued to improve very satisfactorily and a few days before her death was able to be driven out, and it was expected that in a few days she could be removed to her brother's residence. on the night before her death she appeared in excellent health and spirits when Mr. Watson left her. About 2 o'clock on Thursday morning, however, she had occasion to get up, when she was seized with a fainting fit. Attendants and physicians were at once summoned and she was conveyed back to bed, but only lived a few minutes. She seemed to realize that death was near at hand and told the doctors it was of no use to make any effort in her behalf. She also told the nurse to convey her love to her husband and relatives.

Under the circumstances Mrs. Watson's death was as much a surprise to the hospital authorities as to her husband and friends, and it was decided to hold a post mortem examination, which revealed the fact that death resulted from heart disease, and was not a result of the operation. The remains were conveyed to Ayr and were interred in the new cemetery on Sunday afternoon. The funeral was one of the largest ever witnessed in the county, friends being present from far and near. The deceased lady was widely known for her genial hospitality, and kindly nature, and was held in the highest esteem by the people of Ayr. It is only a few weeks since the family were called upon to mourn the sudden death of Mrs. Bryant, Mr. Watson's eldest daughter in California, and we need scarcely add that they have the heartfelt sympathy of their many friends in the hour of their sorrow and bereavement.

      Passed Away

There died in New York on Tuesday last, at the advanced age of 96 years, Mrs. Agnes McKellar, mother of Mrs. John Watson, of Ayr. When Mr. and Mrs. Watson visited New York some months ago, they found Mrs. McKellar in but indifferent health, and Mrs. Watson remained in the city to smooth as far as possible the declining days of her mother. Mr. Watson left for New York on Wednesday.
