Tannery at Philipsburg - 1878 style
The tannery or gerverie at Philipsburg was owned by Forler and Niebergal. It was located on the west side of Christopher Doerings store (on farmland once owned by Earl and Ed Doering) and owned by Christopher Doering. In 1878 it was a $30,000-a-year business. The photo shown is of the second tannery building on the site. The first one burned and so did this one, but no dates indicating when can be found. Shown are (left to right) Hugo Grummel, Henry Peterman, John Rowe and Norman Eulenstein. Note the large tanned hide to the right of the open door.
