The Grand Trunk Railway had plans for a cross-Canada route but it also needed a cross-Ontario line to link Montreal, Toronto and Detroit, thus giving Canada access to the flourishing American Midwest economy. The finalized route brought the Grand Trunk through Berlin, a village of ”on a good day” 1,100 people in 1853: it also brought the Henry Jackson family. His job was to ensure the GTR tracks from Guelph to Stratford were properly constructed. He stored the required supplies on a triangular Berlin property close to the route. Once the line was finished, Jackson purchased that triangular plot and, in 1860, erected what was once termed the “most magnificent house between Toronto and Detroit.”

Modern-day Kitchener streets King West, Francis North and Water North define the property. The new home was finished just in time to have a drawing of it appear on Tremaine's 1861 county map.
