Losing her husband to typhus, Watson's mother struggled with five young children and a failing mill to run. The mill was eventually sold in 1864 to John Tilt and Graham Watson. After the old machinery bill was settled, the sale netted Susan Watson in the vicinity of a hundred dollars. A disaster, but she salvaged enough homespun blanket yardages from it to clothe her family for a number of years. Homer and his brother and sister were decked out in matching clothes, caps, hats, and even boots, all made from blanket material. Being an excellent seamstress, she also did custom sewing to earn a living for the family and to raise one of our countries founding landscape painters.
